Freddie Welsh wins fight to become Light-Weight Champion of the World.
Freddie Welsh of Pontypridd, Wales gained the title of Light-Weight Champion of the World today when he defeated Californian Willie Richie at the National Sporting Club in London. The battle was a strenuous one of 20 rounds. There was no knock-out blow; instead the referee had to give his decision on points.
Huge crowds thronged the streets of Cardiff in celebration after the fight singing Welsh national airs. The Welsh mountains were also ablaze with celebratory bonfires.
