Boxing in the Antient Concert Rooms
A large crowd was drawn to a boxing tournament tonight held in the Antient Concert Rooms. The programme, while limited to three fights, worked out in capital fashion and provided a great three hours of sport.
The big event was the return match between Jem Roche of Wexford and Johnny Matheson of Scotland. It went on a full 20 rounds, and Roche who seemed unlikely to last the full distance at some points, upset calculations and not only outstayed but outpaced his rival towards the close. By the end of the match he had a big margin of points in his favour.
Other fights on the night included Jim Lewes (Guiness Brewer’s) vs Bill Hodgens (Dublin). This was a 15 rounds contest and ended in a draw. Frank Dwyer of Dublin also fought against Frank Walsh of Dublin in a six-round contest. This was a brief bout with both men trying hard from the outset, but with Dwyer winning.
The fights drew a large crowd, particularly to see the main event, and not a person present left disappointed with the evening's entertainment.
