Former heavyweight boxing champion barred from fighting

Published: 7 January 1914

Enraged over the action of the New York State Boxing Commission in barring him from the fighting game in New York State, former heavy-weight champion, Bob Fitzsimmons, has issued a lengthy statement, in which he flayed the individuals on the Board and renounced his American citizenship. Fitzsimmons, 51, also stated that if he was not allowed to box he will starve himself to death.

The Commission barred him because they feel he no longer possesses the stamina to stand a fast bout, stating he could not box at any club in the state. The ban came after Fitzsimmons issued an open challenge of a 10 round bout.
