Boy whipped for attempting to derail train
A schoolboy who was inspired by seeing a train derailed in a film attempted to do the same at Kirkby in Lancashire.
Charles Giffiths, placed stones twenty inches high on the railings in an attempt to wreck the London Express but was thwarted by a driver who averted the disaster by warning others. The West Riding Magistrates Court was told that eighty lives would have been lost and the boy was ordered to receive six strokes of the birch for his actions.
