Americans demand apology from Mexicans
The arrest of a detachment of United States marines at Tampico in Mexico has provoked a serious dispute between the United States and Mexico. The United States has significant oil and property interests in the area, which has been destabilised by revolution in Mexico. Although the marines have been released, the American authorities, led by Rear Admiral Henry T. Mayo, have demanded a 21-gun salute and a formal apology from the Mexican government. The apology has been issued, but not the 21-gun salute. Latest reports suggest that the Americans have dispatched warships to the area.
