Lady Gregory’s new plans for the Abbey Theatre on wheels
It has been reported that Lady Gregory, a pioneering force in the establishment of the Abbey Theatre, wants to spend her remaining fortune educating the Irish peasantry, and expose them to the works of the Abbey Theatre. One proposal she is said to be considering is to begin a perambulating theatre, much in the vein of the travelling circus, which could travel the remote parts of Ireland staging plays. This would bypass the problem of the lack of suitable venues outside the main towns and cities, and also allow all the staging, dress facilities and actors to travel as one. This is not a new idea for the Abbey, as something similar was suggested seven years ago. Today neither Lady Gregory, who is travelling, nor Mr Yeats could be contacted for comment on the plan.
