Trains dynamited in South African labour dispute

Published: 10 January 2014

A national strike of railwaymen in South Africa has descended into mayhem. Traffic on many railways in the country is at a standstill with leaders of the labour movement placed under arrest and charged with sedition. Three sticks of dynamite were discovered under the line between Witpoortje and Luipanzdsvill, while the Cape Mail was also attacked when its front wheels were blown off by dynamite. Across the country trains have also been derailed and a series of other incidents have occurred.

Armed members of the Transvaal Civil Defence Force and the burghers of several districts in the Transvaal and the Orange Free State have been called out. It is expected that martial law will be proclaimed tomorrow.
