Tight skirts place women in rail danger
An illustration of one of the most recent designs available from Madame Doyle of Wicklow Street. Note the narrowness around the ankles; it is this characteristic that may be putting ladies in jeopardy. Photo: Irish Life, 17 April 1914. Tight skirts place women in rail danger

The distance between the platform and the train at certain Irish railway stations has caused discomfort to women wearing the modern fashion of tight skirts. For some, it has left it extremely difficult to board or leave the train. Complaints from women have been satirised in The Irish Independent where a columnist has noted that the simplest solution would be for women to avoid the wearing modern, narrow skirts rather than asking rail companies to alter the level of their platforms - not least because fashion would most likely have shifted by the time the construction work was complete.
