Storstad to blame for Empress of Ireland disaster
The whole blame for the sinking of the Empress of Ireland in the St. Lawrence river on 28 May has been placed on Alfred Tuftenes, the first officer of the Storstad, by the Commission of Inquiry that was established by the Canadian government.
More than 1,000 people lost their lives when the two ships collided in fog. The Commission held Mr. Tuftenes responsible for changing the course of his ship and also set out a series of recommendations aimed at making water transport safer.
