Funeral for Empress of Ireland Liner Crew
The aftermath of the tragic sinking of the Empress of Ireland continues with the confirmed loss of a family of nine from Glasgow. These were Wm. Russell and his two daughters Sarah and Minnie, the latter’s husband and their five children.
Of the five electrical engineers reported lost, all are now reported safe, except H. Bryan.
A funeral in Quebec took place yesterday morning of 12 of the liner’s crew and military honours were rendered by the garrison. Services were held at the Catholic and Anglican Cathedrals at which the Duke of Connaught and the Dominion and Quebec Provincial Governments were represented. Captain Kendall was also present as chief mourner and was greatly affected, making no effort to restrain his tears.
The Empress of Ireland sank on May 29 after colliding with a Norwegian coal freighter, the Storstad. The ship was Liverpool bound when it sank.
