The Jersey-born golfer Harry Vardon has won the British Open for the sixth time. Mr. Vardon triumphed at Prestwick in front of 25,000 spectators after a titanic struggle with J.H. Taylor. Such was the excitement as the competition reached its climax, that a small army of stewards attempted to pen in the crowd using long lines of rope, but even then the rushing of the crowd after the leading group resembled that of a stampede.

Vardon is the most successful golfer ever to play the game and has also won the US Open.
