Carson is too old to fight

Guildford, 16 February 1915 - Sir Edward Carson, the Ulster Unionist leader, told a crowded meeting in Guildford in England last night that he was too old to go to the front, but that he had given his whole family to the war. Carson's sons William Henry Lambert Carson and Walter Seymour Carson are both serving at the front.

He said, however, that recruitment was vital to ensure victory in the war and that all talk of peace needed to be quashed: ‘The issue of the contest is quite clear. Is savagery or civilisation to prevail? Any man who suggests peace at the present moment should be ashamed to hold up his head.’
