Warning to emigrants

Published: 13 December 1913

A warning has been given to those planning to emigrate to the United States about the present labour conditions in the country. It appears that the current economic climate there does not justify the rush of immigration.

During the first nine months of 1913 over a million immigrants have entered the US; a number much greater than that for the corresponding periods in 1912 or 1911.

Currently, there is not work for all in America and there are various indications that unemployment will become more general this winter. There has been a discharge of workers across numerous industries and even railways are reducing their payroll to a minimum and strikes have been considered.

The increasing immigration from Eastern and Southern Europe tends to pull wages down, so Irish emigrants going to the United States in search of work can expect a hard struggle.
