Speeding motorists in court

Published: 14 August 1913

At the Kingstown Police Court today two men appeared before the bench charged with speeding in a motor car. In the first case, John McCarton, the chauffeur of Mr Stanley Cochrane, the well known businessman from Bray, was charged with driving through Foxrock at a speed of 28 miles per hour. Mr McCarton stated that he did not realise that he was going so fast, and that he was trying to get Mr Cochrane home in time for his dinner. He was found guilty and fined twenty shillings. Denis Ryan, also a chauffeur, was also fined by the court at the same amount for driving at 28.14 miles per hour on the Rock Road at Merrion. Ryan stated that he had no idea how fast he was going as he did not have a speedometer with him.
