Severe floods in Russia

Published: 27 January 1914

Residents of St Petersburg, Russia woke up this morning to find the area severely flooded. The river Neva had already risen six and a half feet over the last few days but the river rose another six inches overnight causing it to overflow and pour into the city.

The flooding was caused by a north-westerly gale which developed yesterday evening causing the ice in the river to break up. Guns were fired from the fortress of SS Peter and Paul’s throughout the night and green lights were displayed on the tower of the Admiralty and ay the fire stations to indicate the extreme danger.

The flooding has caused some damage to properties and bridges in the city, particularly in the low lying region.
