New song for the Irish Volunteers published

Published: 3 January 1914

We produce below, a song that has been been composed by Jack Barry for the Irish Volunteers and published in the Kerryman newspaper.

'Hurrah for our Irish Volunteers,
Then fathers' sons, sure, should know no fears,
And pride, and the hope of the land endears,
The martial life for the Volunteers.

If we look back on the days long gone,
That we've gleamed into through tale and song,
We'll see that the rattling Gaels who shone,
'Gainst the Dane and the Saxon were armed strong.

Chorus:
Hurrah for our Irish Volunteers etc.

If I mention the name of our Brian Boru,
Of Art McMurrough and Shane and Hugh,
And Owen O'Neill and O'Donnell too,
What a thrill finds the blood, boys, of me and you.

Chorus:
Hurrah for our Irish Volunteers etc.

Oh if I spoke of our sons away,
The fame of the 'Wild Geese' in Sarsfield's day,
Would you sneer like a coward til your bones decay,
Or arm and march for the fight and fray.

Chorus:
Hurrah for our Irish Volunteers etc.

Or if we glance at the "Stars and Stripes",
And "the green-mounted boys" in that Nation's wars,
We'll envy our Brothers their joys and scars,
And drink a health to the mighty Mars.

Chorus:
Hurrah for our Irish Volunteers etc.

And if we view it all the nations grown,
That rule their soil and protect their own,
How all their rights are preserved and won,
We will fix our eyes on the sword and gun.

Chorus:
Hurrah for our Irish Volunteers etc.

Then here's again to our Volunteers,
God bless their cannon and pikes and spears,
And here's success to the hand that shares,
In the Nation's cause, and the heart that dares.

Chorus:
Hurrah for our Irish Volunteers etc.
