Mme. Caillaux in court over murder

Published: 20 July 1914

The trial of Madame Caillaux began in Paris today. Caillaux, the wife of the former French Prime Minister is on trial for murdering the editor of Le Figaro Gaston Calmette earlier this year.

She entered the court today wearing a black veil and a velvet hat of the same colour and showing great emotion. She was questioned for three hours, often breaking down while giving her statement. She claims she did not intend to kill Mr Calmette and declared, ‘these revolvers go off by themselves.’

The trial will resume tomorrow.
