Mansion destroyed by fire in Dublin

Published: 30 January 1914

Kilternan Abbey, a large four storey mansion, situated about two miles from Stepaside, Dublin was completely destroyed by fire today. The Abbey which stood on 90 acres was owned by Mrs Anderson of Kenmare, Co. Kerry but Mrs Hughes and her family were currently occupying the property. It was an ancient building and in recent years it had become quite dilapidated, so much so that Mrs Hughes and her family were only able to live in the upstairs portion of the building.

Mrs Hughes was the only occupant when the fire broke out and she managed to escape quickly without harm.

The fire started in the back chimney, the woodwork of which is thought to have become ignited. Owing to the strong wind the flames quickly engulfed the entire building, destroying it completely.
