Man murdered at Boyne Obelisk after attending a Volunteer parade

A murder was perpetrated at Oldbridge, near Drogheda today when a man named Patrick Briscoe, was shot near to his house. He was a herder for Colonel Coddington and lived in one of his employers cottages near to the Oldbridge Estate. His body was found near to the celebrated Boyne Obelisk.

It appears Briscoe had attended a Volunteer parade near Slane and was shot on his return home. The gun was evidently fired at close range. A man named Thomas Farrell was arrested in connection with the murder and was taken to the West Gate Barracks in Drogheda.

Briscoe is survived by his wife and two young children. 

The crime has cast a gloom over the district hitherto remarkable for its history of the Battle of the Boyne.
