Man Dies in Capel Street Fire
A 62 year old man, named locally as George Fields, died when his house at 62 Capel Street burst into flames. The cause of the fire is not known, and appears to have broken out in the deceased's bedroom two hours after he went to bed. Mr Fields was extensively burnt, but his death appears to have been from smoke inhalation. The trade union leader, James Larkin, was on Capel Street when the fire broke out, and he assisted in breaking open the door of the house. He assisted in rescuing Mr Fields’ step-daughters, and was commended for his actions.
