Irish tenor John Mc Cormack returns from extensive tour

Published: 14 May 1914

John McCormack, the famous Irish tenor has just returned from a 10 month tour of North America, New Zealand and Australia. There were only two other musicians on the tour with McCormack: Vincent O’Brien who was his accompanist and a violinist who assisted at the concerts. Throughout his tour he gave 145 performances; he visited nearly all the principle cities in Australia and New Zealand and several cities and towns on the East and West coasts of America, with the tour closing in New York on Sunday night.

The tour was particularly successful in Australia; Mr O’Brien the accompanist recalls that the crowd were particularly enthusiastic throughout this leg of the tour. The shows in the cities in Australia regularly sold out and one night they took in £800.

In Vancouver, McCormack was joined by Sir Joseph McBride, the Prime Minister, who is a very strong Home Ruler and he spoke earnestly of his satisfaction at seeing it about to be achieved.
