Irish drivers not paying motor tax

Published: 25 November 1913

New figures released today show that Irish motorists only paid £10,567 in motor tax. The Local Government Board has expressed its opinion that this figure is far too low given the large number of cars and lorries on Irish roads, and believes that the majority of drivers are not paying the annual tax.

A number of drivers appeared in court in Portadown today charged with not having paid their road tax. The solicitor appearing for the prosecuting local council told that court that it is a serious issue as the Local Government Board has intimated it will not make money available to local councils for the upkeep of roads unless they collect the tax and enforce the law.
