Half of historic city of Salem destroyed in fire

Published: 26 June 1914

A huge fire in the historic witch-hunting town of Salem, Massachusetts has caused considerable destruction to property throughout the area. The fire has continued to burn throughout the day but it is believed to be under control. The fire originated in an explosion at the Korn Leather Factory on the west side of the city.

The loss is estimated at 10 million dollars and 10,000 people have been left homeless. No deaths have been reported but 50 people have been taken into hospital.

Firemen from Boston, Lynn and Manchester have aided the local brigades.
