Drunken soldier attempts suicide in Naas
An ex-soldier, John Shortt, recently returned from India, was arrested for violent conduct and taken to the police barracks in Naas. Shortly after being placed in his cell, Shortt tried to hang himself with his braces, but was discovered before any harm was done. Later that night attempted to hang himself once more, this time with a band of material torn from his underpants. Again he was discovered and saved, but this time the police placed him in handcuffs for the night so he could not harm himself.
He was said to be under the influence of drink, and now seems much calmer and has expressed sorrow for his actions.
