Churchill heckled by suffragettes

Published: 16 November 1913

Today Mr Winston Churchill addressed a crowd of 5,000 people at a major Liberal Party gathering at the Alexandra Palace in London.

From the start of his speech Mr Churchill was heckled and interrupted by male supporters of the suffragette cause. Each time an interruption occurred, a large number of stewards would converge to eject the protestor and each time they were helped by people in the crowd. With every ejection successfully completed, the crowd cheered the stewards.

One man did manage to get to the front of the platform where Churchill was speaking, and was heard to shout, ‘What about the torture of women?’ before he was tackled and removed by the stewards.

In a wide ranging speech that touched on many issues, Churchill did state his belief that one great party in the state (the unionists) had declared its resolve to persist in the pursuit of certain political objectives that might lead to rebellion and civil war. He argued that their campaign should be resisted and that Liberals should ensure that Home Rule is a success.
