Chicago circus trainer devoured by lions

Published: 21 June 1914

There was a tragic incident at the Chicago circus today when a trainer named Dietricks was fatally wounded by six lions. Dietricks had entered the cage containing the animals and was attacked and knocked over by one of the lions. The others immediately pounced on him, killing the trainer and then partially devouring him.

To secure his body it was necessary to spray it with strong disinfectant so as to drive the lions off their prey. During the excitement, a lion escaped and was found wandering the streets of the city, terrorising inhabitants. It was, however, finally driven back to its cage without harming anyone.

Crazed with the taste of blood, the lions continued roaring throughout the night.
