Carson appeals to Loyalists to join the UVF
A circular has been sent from Sir Edward Carson to Orange Lodges across Ulster. In it he congratulates members of the institution for joining the UVF in large numbers. He also urges all eligible men who have not yet joined to do so as soon as possible. In response to Carson’s plea, Colonel Wallace, the Secretary of the Ulster Provincial Grand Lodge of the Orange Institution stated ‘We have all got to stand together, and fight if necessary. We must therefore drill together as the Ulster Volunteers’. Wallace closed his response with these lines:
‘Stand together, fall together,
As our fathers stood,
Shoulder, hip, knees together,
Ulster’s brotherhood’.
