Bishop warns of the evils of emigrating to America
Bishop Gunn of Natchez in the United States is currently in Ireland and has taken the opportunity of his visit to warn Irish youngsters about the evil of emigration. He argues that emigration should be made a crime in Ireland and treated as an act of treason. He urges the youth of Ireland to stay at home and make good on the promise of Home Rule and the associated benefits he envisages in terms of the country’s economy, traditions and spiritual well being.
Bishop Gunn also detailed how young Irish girls in particular suffer in America, referring to the ‘horrors’ that they endure. The bishop's advice to the Irish boy and girl is: ‘Stay at home: God made you for Ireland’.
