Archbishop of Perth speaks in Ennis

Published: 29 October 1913

The Most Rev Dr Clune, Archbishop of Perth, addressed a large crowd in Ennis today at the town hall. The Archbishop was born in Ruan, Co Clare, and has been holidaying at home for the first time in twenty-seven years.

He spoke of travelling across Ireland for the first time in over a quarter of a century, and spoke at how he marvelled at the advances Ireland had made. He was particularly enthused by the prospect of Home Rule, which he compared to the successful and profitable use of home rule by his home state, Western Australia in recent years. If Ireland could follow the Western Australian example, he had no fears for the economic or social well being of country.

Picking up on contemporary matters, the Archbishop congratulated the Ancient Order of Hibernians for so successfully mobilising against the socialists who wished to steal the children of Dublin from their Catholic parents. His speech was met by rapturous applause.
