New book reveals William Martin Murphy rejected a knighthood
Dublin, 6 November 1914 - A new book has cast light on the story of William Martin Murphy’s apparent pursuit of a knighthood.
Opponents of Mr. Murphy have long suggested that his invitation to King Edward VII to visit the International Irish Exhibition in Dublin in 1907 was motivated by a desire for a knighthood.
Now, Arnold Wright’s book 'Disturbed Dublin' sets out a different version of events, one in which Mr. Murphy was offered a knighthood but declined it because he had no desire for a title.
