Two young girls drown in Dublin
Dublin, 5 February 1915 - Two young Dublin girls drowned today in the Royal Canal at Drumcondra.
Katie (13) and Annie (11) McCarthy were on a half-day holiday from school when they went for a walk from their home on Dorset Street along the banks of the canal. Their younger sister Eily was with them and she dropped a hoop into the water opposite Mountjoy Prison. Her two sisters, while attempting to retrieve the hoop, fell in and were unable to climb out of the canal. An elderly woman who witnessed the scene is also reported to have died from a heart attack.
The father of the two girls is serving in the Great War.
