Tourists stranded as war breaks out
Thousands of English tourists are stranded all across Europe as war breaks out all around them.
There were chaotic scenes in London’s central train stations yesterday as those tourists who managed to escape across the English Channel on boats arrived with their luggage. Many more were left behind with almost 1,000 stranded on the quays of Boulogne. From Rotterdam come reports of men fighting and women fainting.
Sources suggest that more than 10,000 tourists are seeking to return to England as the German authorities issued a statement: ‘We can guarantee no facilities for return. But if the English authorities oblige Germany in this matter by giving facilities to Germans in England anxious to return to their country, then Germany will reciprocate.’
