The Lusitania has successfully rescued from the sea the crew of the Mayflower, which had been drifting rudderless in the mid-Atlantic, with all her canvas carried away and with a bad leak in her hull.

Amidst heavy seas, the Lusitania sent out a lifeboat manned with volunteers from amongst its own crew. One by one, the crew of the Mayflower were pulled by rope through the sea and into the lifeboat. All on board the ship were saved, although the ship’s cat was drowned despite the efforts of one of the seamen to save him.
