Three young Tullamore men executed by Free State in Birr castle

    Tullamore, 27 January 1923 - Three young men from Tullamore, Co. Offaly, were executed at Birr Castle yesterday morning.

    The men have been named as Patrick Cunningham, William Conroy and Colm Kelly. All three had been tried by a military court on 5 January 1923 on the charge of possessing, without proper authority, firearms at Tullamore on November 21st, 1922.

    The men were also charged with ‘feloniously and burglariously entering with intent the houses of several residents in Tullamore and stealing therefrom a silver watch, several sums of money, with other goods and chattels.’

    All three were found guilty and sentenced to death, a sentence which was discharged at 8am yesterday.
