The brutality of winter in the trenches

Europe, 23 November 1914 - An unusually severe winter has created great misery for the hundreds of thousands of soldiers living in trenches across Europe.

Biting frost and driving snow is followed by penetrating slush when temperatures rise. Reports from every front tell of hardship, illness and death from conditions that are testing the resolve of soldiers from every army.
