Shots fired at soccer match in Belfast

A junior soccer match played in Belfast between Linfield Rangers and Springfield Amateurs ended last night with shots being fired at spectators at the end of the match.

Late in the game, a goal scored by the Springfield team - who hail from the Falls Road area of Belfast - led to Linfield supporters discharging a volley of shots from revolvers as they invaded the field.

They sang songs associated with loyalism, including ‘Dolly’s Brae’, and threw stones at the Springfield supporters. Police and stewards eventually cleared the pitch and the match was completed with Springfield claiming a two-goal victory.

As the crowd - estimated at 2,000 - left the Grosvenor Road grounds there was further violence in surrounding streets.
