New Lord Mayor of Dublin is ‘not the slave of the machine’

Dublin, 24 January 1915 - New Mayors and Lord Mayors have been elected around the country.

The new officeholders include John Clancy in Dublin, Crawford McCullagh in Belfast and Henry O'Shea in Cork.

Remarking on Mr. Clancy’s election in Dublin, one commentator noted that he was a 'strong personality and not the slave of the machine'.

In his opening address, the new Lord Mayor said he was going to make no promises to anyone and would therefore never be in a position to have to break a promise.
