Lady Aberdeen presides in Rome

Lady Aberdeen, whose husband is Viceroy of Ireland, today presided over several meetings of the Executive Committee of the International Council of Women in Rome.

While in Rome, Lady Aberdeen is expected to have a private audience with the pope, despite the fact that the Vatican opposes some of the aims of the Council, notably the idea that the wife should be given identical rights to her husband in the family and with regard to property.

The Conservatore Romano, the organ of the Vatican, says that this would subvert order in the family and would, indeed, abolish the institution of the family.
