Irish emigrants humiliated on voyage to America
New York, 15 June 1915 - The arrival in New York of the American liner St. Paul has brought stories of the humiliation of 300 Irish emigrants.
Many of the emigrants - all of them from Connacht - were forced to march about the decks carrying broom-sticks over their shoulders and wearing tin saucepans on their hands.
The sailors who oversaw the humiliation were mocking the failure of the men to enlist in the army.
