Sir Hugh Lane appointed Director of the National Gallery of Ireland
Sir Hugh Lane has been appointed as the new director of the National Gallery of Ireland.
A meeting yesterday of the Governors and Guardians of the gallery saw Sir Hugh defeat Walter Strickland, the current registrar of the gallery in an election.
Fifteen of the seventeen Governors of the gallery were present for the vote and the new director will replace Sir Walter Armstrong, who has served as director since 1892. The position is permanent and pensionable, with a salary of £500 per annum, as well as annual sum of £150 for travel expenses.
It is rumoured that Sir Hugh will decline to accept any salary.
