Hill 60 captured by British troops

Belgium, 21 April 1915 - A piece of land known as Hill 60 has been captured by British troops after a brutal battle in which many lives have been lost. The land is on the Ypres-Comines railway line, just west of Zwarteleen in Western Flanders.

All German trenches in the area have now been captured and prisoners have been taken. In a report released yesterday, Field Marshall Sir John French noted that British losses were ‘very heavy, but the Germans suffered still more severely’.

Hill 60 is considered a key strategic landmark in the general area.
