Growing indiscipline of Irish teachers
Irish national school teachers are demonstrating ‘growing indiscipline and resistance to recognised authority’, according to Dr. Starkie, Resident Commissioner of Education in Ireland.
Dr. Starkie’s opinion emerged during the course of his appearance before the Viceregal Committee of Inquiry into Primary Education last May and June, during which he discussed, at length, the current system of inspection in Irish schools as well as the gathering political storm around the issue of teaching Irish.
The report of the Committee is being published in installments by The Irish Independent. Further evidence is expected to become public in the coming weeks.
