Flogging of Indians in South America
J.F. Woodroffe, a railway operator and rubber trader, has condemned the gross abuses he has witnessed during the last eight years in South America.
The work on rubber plantations and railway construction is largely done by slaves and is facilitated by local authorities. ‘The purchases and resales of Indian children are of common occurrence’, says Woodroffe.
Europeans working in South America quickly adapt to such a way of behaviour and it is considered dangerous to speak out against it.
Woodroffe is publishing a book on his experiences.
