Dispute over payments to teachers
A government official giving evidence to the Viceregal Commission on Irish Primary Education has said that the payment of increments based on the performance of a teacher was vital to providing a good education.
Mr. Bonaparte Wise, a senior official charged with education policy, said that ‘generally speaking, teachers required a money stimulus to give their best work.’
The inquiry also considered the process by which school inspectors should evaluate the performance of teachers and of the school in which they worked. The report of the inquiry has just been published.
