Commander of British Forces in Ireland discusses moving against Ulster Volunteers
Sir Arthur Paget, the Commander of the British Armed Forces in Ireland, has revealed the anxiety and distress prevailing in the army over the prospect of moving against the Ulster Volunteer Force.
In a speech to a Corinthian Club dinner in the Gresham Hotel, Sir Arthur said: ‘I have been assured over and over again that there is no question and no intention on the part of the Government to make use of the troops of this country, except for one purpose - a very proper purpose - to maintain law and order.’
Sir Arthur said that he had now spent many years in Ireland and had become very fond of the Irish.
