Coal strike in Wales as 300,000 men stop work
South Wales, 16 July 1915 - Despite the government proclamation under the Munitions Act making strikes illegal, the miners of the South Wales coalfields stopped work yesterday.
The dispute over wages has gathered momentum since the beginning of the summer when pit owners declined to discuss an agreement with miners that would have seen their wages increase. Claims that the men are being pushed into a strike they do not want to take by extremists and syndicalists have been denied and it is not clear when work will recommence.
